Electric car insurance in Pakistan: read the battery line before you pay

Halfway down the exclusions in Jubilee General's comprehensive car policy brief sits a line written with a petrol car in mind. Tyre and battery damage isn't covered unless the car is damaged at the same time, and then the insurer pays half the replacement cost (Jubilee General, policy brief).

On a Corolla, the battery is a small box under the bonnet you swap every few years. On an electric car it's the most expensive part of the vehicle, which is why that clause matters so much for electric car insurance in Pakistan. Almost every policy you'll be offered still uses wording built around engines. Premiums are mostly familiar, but the fine print needs a slower read.

What electric car insurance in Pakistan costs in 2026

Comprehensive cover here is priced as a percentage of the car's insured value, and we couldn't find an insurer publishing separate EV rates. This is what insurers and the main marketplace were quoting when we checked.

Who quotes it Rate on insured value Date
PakWheels insurer list 1.25% to 2.0%, several "from" figures opened November 2026
United Insurance, general guide most companies 2% to 4%; its own 1.6% September 2025
United Insurance, older cars 1.5% for newer models, 2% to 3% for older January 2026
Insurancewala (Lahore insurance lead-generation site) typically 2% to 3% June 2026
HBL car loan page, financed cars 1.4% in one place, 1.9% in another opened November 2026

Sources: PakWheels; United Insurance, September 2025; United Insurance, January 2026; Insurancewala, June 2026; HBL. The PakWheels list runs from Shaheen at 1.25 percent to EFU at 2.0 percent, but PakWheels' own EFU page shows 3.5 percent, and more with a tracker (PakWheels, EFU), so treat any listed rate as a starting point for a quote, not a price.

In rupees, for a BYD Atto 3 at its Rs 8,990,000 ex-factory price (PakWheels), the first year's premium could be anywhere from about Rs 112,000 to about Rs 360,000.

Bar chart of the first-year comprehensive premium on a BYD Atto 3 insured at Rs 8.99 million in November 2026: about Rs 112,375 at 1.25 percent, Rs 179,800 at 2 percent, Rs 269,700 at 3 percent and Rs 359,600 at 4 percent
One car, four quoted rates. The spread is worth a few phone calls.

That gap, roughly Rs 247,000 between the cheapest and dearest end, is the best argument for getting three quotes. A smaller EV costs proportionately less. A Honri VE 3.0 at Rs 4.4 million comes to about Rs 55,000 to Rs 176,000 on the same range. Quotes may add taxes and a tracker on top, so ask for the all-in figure.

The battery clause, and why it matters more on an EV

Go back to that Jubilee line. The same brief also excludes "mechanical and electrical breakdowns/failures" and consequential loss, and its takaful version carries the same wording (Jubilee General Takaful, policy brief). We don't know how Jubilee applies the 50 percent rule to a traction battery, and nobody should find out at claim time.

TPL Insurance's own EV guide, from September 2026, is careful too. It says certain kinds of accidental battery damage may be covered, depending on the policy terms (TPL Insurance, September 2026). That "may" leaves the decision with the insurer.

Comparison of standard policy wording with what an EV owner should get in writing. Standard brief: tyre and battery damage excluded unless the car is damaged at the same time, then 50 percent of replacement cost; mechanical and electrical breakdowns excluded; flood covered; consequential loss excluded. Ask for: the traction battery covered in full as part of the car in an accident, fire or flood; battery faults handled under the maker's warranty; water damage to battery and motor included; clarity on loss of use while the car waits for parts
Wording from Jubilee General's published policy brief. Other insurers' wordings differ, so ask for yours.

So the questions are simple. Is the high-voltage battery treated as part of the car's body and running gear, covered in full when the car is hit, burnt or flooded? Or does the battery exclusion apply to it? Get the answer in writing, on the policy schedule or in an email from the insurer, not from the agent's mouth.

Breakdown is a different matter. On a standard policy, a cell that fails on its own isn't an insurance event. That's what the manufacturer's battery warranty is for. Keep the warranty booklet and service record somewhere safe, because the warranty claim needs them.

Cables, wallboxes and the bits nobody lists

None of the Pakistani motor policy pages or briefs we read mentions a charging cable, a portable charger or a wallbox. That leaves three questions for the agent.

  • Is the portable charging cable that lives in the boot covered if the car is broken into, or only if the whole car is stolen?
  • If the car is damaged while plugged in at home, is the charging port repair included?
  • Is the wall-mounted charger insured at all? It's fixed to your house, so a home or fire policy may be the better place for it.

If the answer is no, decide whether the wallbox is worth a separate cover. One retailer listed a 7.4 kW unit at Rs 108,000 in September 2026, hardware only, as our guide to what a home charger install costs notes, so it's not small change.

Floods, underpasses and the monsoon

On this, the standard wording is reassuring. Jubilee's brief lists flood, hail and storm damage among covered perils, Salaam Takaful's comprehensive plan lists natural calamities (PakWheels, Salaam Takaful), and United Insurance lists flood, hailstorm and earthquake (United Insurance, September 2025). Read your own schedule to confirm, though, since a cheaper third-party or collision-only policy won't include them.

What the policy can't do is undo a bad decision. A flooded EV shouldn't be started or charged before an authorised workshop has checked it, and our guide to charging in the rain explains why water and a high-voltage pack are a poor mix, even long after the water has gone. Call the insurer first, photograph everything, and let them arrange the tow.

Who fixes a Chinese EV after a crash?

Newer brands differ from a Suzuki here. BYD's network reached its seventh dealership, in Korangi, in June 2026 (ProPakistani, June 2026). That's growing, but it's a long way from a workshop in every district. In April 2026, BYD's Pakistani partner Mega Motor Company and TPL Insurance launched MMC Cares, a protection plan for BYD owners covering accidents, theft, damage and breakdowns (Business Recorder, April 2026). The announcement didn't give prices or say how battery claims are handled, so ask the dealer for the full terms.

For any brand, ask three things. Will the insurer pay for repairs at the authorised dealer, at dealer rates? Will it use genuine parts, even if they have to come from China? And what happens to you while the car waits for those parts? Jubilee's exclusion of consequential loss suggests the answer to the last one, at least on a standard policy, is nothing.

The value falls, and so should your premium

Insurers set the sum insured from the car's current market value, not the price you paid. United Insurance says comprehensive cover for an older car is set by its current market value and model (United Insurance, January 2026), and Insurancewala warns against insuring above market value, since you pay for cover you can't claim. At every renewal, check the figure on the schedule against what the car would really fetch.

EV values in Pakistan are still finding their level, and battery health drives most of a used EV's price, as our guide to checking a used electric car explains. If you've kept a battery-health report, it helps you argue for a fair value after a total loss.

One more limit to watch. The Jubilee comprehensive product in that brief covers private cars up to five years old, with a maximum sum insured of 9 million. An Atto 3 fits under that ceiling; a BYD Seal or Sealion 7 doesn't, so expect to deal with an office or a broker for those.

Takaful and trackers

Shariah-compliant cover is easy to find. Pak Qatar General Takaful and Salaam Takaful both appear on PakWheels' list, at 1.4 percent and from 1.3 percent, and Salaam's listing claims it was the first general takaful company here to share its surplus with policyholders. Jubilee runs a takaful version of the same comprehensive product. If your car is on Islamic finance, the bank may arrange the takaful itself. Bank Alfalah's Islamic auto finance does exactly that and folds the cost into the rentals (Bank Alfalah KFS), so you may not get to choose the operator.

Trackers can add a surprising amount to a quote. PakWheels lists tracker fees from Rs 7,000 at Askari to Rs 16,500 at IGI, with a couple of insurers showing none. Insurancewala says a tracker is often required for cars worth Rs 8 million or more, and costs Rs 15,000 to 25,000 once. On HBL's car loan, the tracker comes bundled with the insurance. Ask whether the tracker is compulsory for your car's value, what it costs each year as well as upfront, and whether it lowers the rate.

Questions for the agent

Checklist of questions for an EV insurance quote in Pakistan: is the high-voltage battery covered in full in an accident, fire or flood; are the charging port, portable cable and wallbox covered; will repairs be done at the authorised dealer with genuine parts; is the sum insured close to today's market value; is a tracker required and what does it cost each year; is flood and natural calamity cover on the schedule; what is the deductible; is there a takaful option

Electric car insurance in Pakistan shouldn't be bought on price alone. The gap between quotes is real money, but so is the gap between a policy that treats your battery as part of the car and one that pays half of it. Ask the battery question first, get the answer on paper, and only then haggle over the rate.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to insure an electric car in Pakistan?

Comprehensive insurance for an electric car in Pakistan costs roughly 1.25 to 4 percent of the insured value a year, going by rates listed by PakWheels and insurers in 2025–26. For a BYD Atto 3 insured at Rs 8.99 million, that's about Rs 112,000 to Rs 360,000 for the first year, before any tracker fee.

Does car insurance cover an EV's battery in Pakistan?

Standard car insurance in Pakistan doesn't always cover an EV's battery in full. Jubilee General's published policy brief excludes battery damage unless the car is damaged at the same time, then pays 50 percent of replacement, and excludes electrical breakdown. As of November 2026, ask your insurer in writing whether the high-voltage battery is covered in full in an accident, fire or flood.

Is flood damage covered by comprehensive car insurance in Pakistan?

Comprehensive car insurance in Pakistan usually covers flood damage. Policy briefs from Jubilee General and United Insurance list flood among covered perils, and Salaam Takaful lists natural calamities. Third-party and collision-only policies don't. Don't start or charge a flooded EV, and call the insurer before you move it.

Do I need a tracker to insure an electric car in Pakistan?

A tracker is often required for cars worth Rs 8 million or more, according to Insurancewala in June 2026, and insurers' tracker fees listed on PakWheels in November 2026 ran from Rs 7,000 to Rs 16,500 where a fee was shown. Whether it's compulsory depends on the insurer and the car's value, so ask before you accept a quote.

Can I get takaful instead of insurance for an EV in Pakistan?

Car takaful is available in Pakistan as an alternative to conventional insurance, from Pak Qatar General Takaful and Salaam Takaful, listed on PakWheels in November 2026 at 1.4 percent and from 1.3 percent. Jubilee General also has a takaful version of its comprehensive cover. None of them publishes a separate EV product that we could find.
